So after the tile in my kitchen was done, my sister-in-law and her mother took down all my cupboard doors fronts and helped me mold them in with molding.

I also changed the hardware. This is a step you should really consider if you want to redo your kitchen. Hardware can be pricey and you can spend more on hardware then on other supplies. So I picked up a can of this lovely spray paint!! $2.98 BABY!
Lined these nasty colored hinges up....
And gave them three coats. (tip...make sure they are cleaned and slightly sanded)
Look at the before and after! BIG difference!

Then I have to admit, after painting by hand and not getting the results I wanted, a friend came to the rescue! And when I say RESCUE, I mean RESCUE!

(Rescued me from drowning in the many tears I cried over these darn cabinets, rescued my poor family from their mother who was verging psychosis due to a messy front room... err....I mean workshop! You get the point. Grateful and Thankful doesn't express how much it helped out that he took them and sprayed them! )
I originally planned to sand and glaze antique them. But after I saw how bright and fresh my kitchen looked. I decided to keep them nice and white!

And I am redoing my island a dark rich CHOCOLATE BROWN!
And I am thinking a nice green shade on the wall would be lovely instead of the red?

Whoa! I can't believe the difference! That is a ton of work, Boogs. I wish you had a BEFORE before--before the tile. Then the difference would be even more dramatic.

LOVE the new look in your kitchen! It looks amazing! I think the brown on the island and green on the walls will look good. I love red, but I think you are right, now it needs a green.

ReplyDeleteI just love your kitchen redo, and can't wait to see it all finished. I am in the progress of painting my kitchen cabinets, also white like yours. I was thinking of distressing them too, but not so sure now, cause if I don't like it then I will have to repaint and me no like repainting something that was just painted. I just have to remember to make sure to take before and after pics like you did. I am terrible at that!! I think you are right about a nice shade of green, I once had a dark shade of red in my kitchen, but I got tired of it quickly so I now have green. How funny is that! Good luck on the rest of your makeover.

Your island will look great chocolate brown, although I think I prefer it in the white with that nice boarding you have on there. What about a butcher block counter top instead? That would set it apart quite nicely.
And you could do the walls a warm light mocha to grab your backsplash.

ReplyDeleteI thought about keeping the white for the island...the only problem is the kids eat there and it is IMPOSSIBLE to keep clean and looking freshly white. It gets all sorts of dirty! So I thought darker might be better to hide the food mess! TEHE!

Your kitchen looks great! All your hard work really paid off. If I might make a suggestion, spray your light with the ORB. We sprayed all of our brass lights, and they turned out great!!

So...I've been thinking about doing the molding to my cabinet doors, too. You didn't explain the process too much. Did you wood putty where the trim meets the door....all the way around? that was the one area that I was concerned with. I'm thinking that's what the picture is of? I LOVE the way your kitchen is turning out!!

I live in a guest cottage on someone's property and it has a cute little galley type kitchen - and believe it or not, the cabinet doors are plastic that is meant to look like wood. You would never know to look at them, but they are. I can paint them if I want, and I know they would brighten up the kitchen considerably.

ReplyDeleteWhat is great about white, is that if they get too dirty around the knobs, or whereEVER, all you do is touch up with paint -easy! I noticed the light fixture in the gold, have you thought about using the spraint paint from your other hardware to match it up?
