Storage Solutions

I don't know about you, but my computer station is always cluttered with paper and things that I need to work on.  It drives me bonkers, but there isn't a whole lot I can do about it.
Then I got this idea.

I bought these magazine holders at the thrift store for .50 cents each.

I then spray painted them gold, with this spray paint.

And next, simply screwed them to the inside of the computer armoire door.

So much better!
Keep checking back for more updates in this space.

Mirror Redo

I have wanted a mirror forever, but I am such a cheap skate I haven't wanted to spend very much! So you can imagine my excitement when I found this LARGE mirror for a meager $20.

This redo was so simple, inexpensive, and easy.
First, I simply cleaned up the mirror.
It had lots of grooves and nooks so I used a Qtip to get all the dust out.

Second, I taped and papered off the mirror portion.

Third, I used THIS spray paint and spray painted the mirror. I did 3 coats.

I then sanded the edges a bit so the gold showed through a little.
And finally I sealed it with a clear coat spray. ( I like the cheap $1 kind)

 Simple, elegant, and lovely.
Just my style!
(I will be adding a wreath to it soon too)

Golden Pumpkin

I have this beautiful fall wreath on my door.
It drew me in the moment I saw it. The flecks of gold and bronzes mixed with fall colors appealed to me.
 Exactly my style.

But I realized ,after I did my pumpkin candy holders, I needed a little contrast.

So I bought a lovely pumpkin.

The only problem was the orange pumpkin was all wrong against my bronze mum holders and the gold flecks in the wreath.

I loved the look of the "gold leafing" on the pumpkins on the wreath and decided to try to mimic that.

So I spray painted the pumpkin.
The problem , now, was it was too gold.

I grabbed some sand paper and, while the spray paint was still tacky, lightly sanded the pumpkin down.
Sanding while the paint was tacky made the paint fleck off and look more like a rub, instead of a  paint. Exactly what it needed.

It added the perfect contrast to my porch.

Is fall underway in your home too?

Pumpkin Candy Holder Revamp

You can find  these candy holders cheap at almost any thrift store.
I paid 50 cents for each of these . (I know what you are thinking -big spender- rigghhtttt!? )

I have been wanting to make pots  out of them for my porch. So I spray painted them both white.

They weren't bad, but they weren't right either.
I was SURE I wanted them to be white, but they just looked chintzy to me. So I decided to spray them again using a Hammered Rust-oleum spray paint.
WOW -- that made all the difference.

Once they were painted and dry, I drilled a few small holes in the bottom and planted some mums in them!

 OH, I am loving them!

Seriously, this $1.00 transformation was well worth it!

Knick Knacks turned FAB

One of the most satisfying ways to decorate is to accessorize. After a room is finished, it is all about the little details. The pillows, the pictures on the wall, the shelves, the side tables and mirrors, and of course some lovely knick knacks.
Those little finds can provide such a WOW impact to a room or even just add the right splash of color.

When you go to the thrift store, keep an open mind. Pretty much anything can be spray painted or painted. So think outside of the box, peruse Pinterest for some fabulous ideas, and be creative.

Here are some previous posts
A owl turned Fabulous-

This ceramic elephant turned into a book weight

Some other fun finds have included small trinket unicorns, swans, squirrels, birds (one of my favorites), and anything that would match your current home decor.

Here are some of the birds I have done recently....I can't pass a lil' bird by without considering buying it.

Spray painting a trinket is easy.
1. Simply wipe down your find with a rag and some warm water.
2. Make sure to choose your spray paint according to your item
(you can find specific spray paint for specific surfaces - metal, plastic, stone, etc.)
3. Spray Paint your item and let dry.

I just found this children's toy at the thrift store for  50 cents.
I decided on a metallic gold color.

EASY PEASY

 Happy thrift store finding.
I hope you all find something wonderful to redo!

Side Table Makeover

I found this above piece at a local thrift store for $3.00.
I don't know about you but when a solid wood piece of  furniture is that cheap--it's like the furniture God's are screaming at me to snatch it up. Luckily, my daughter was in need of a side table too.

This was a quick and easy redo.
First I washed down the piece with hot soapy water. Next, I removed the hardware and taped off the glass with painters tape and used tinfoil to cover the glass.

I then got this spray paint...

...and gave it 3 coats of spray.

After it was dry I lightly sanded the edges and replaced the hardware.

Voila-
A simple and inexpensive Drab to Fab.

Drab to FAB Dresser

I found this dresser online for $40.00. It had a gazillion coats of paint on it and was in need of some serious prep work, but it had pretty good bones. Plus it was all wood, that is always a bonus.

Here is what a did-

1. I cleaned the dresser really well with a little hot soapy water.
2. I then removed the knobs and sanded it down. Not straight down to the wood, but  I sanded it enough to give it a smooth feel.
3.Then I wiped it down again with hot water. (You want to make sure to remove all the fine dust particles.)
4. I spray painted the dresser with this-

It took 4 coats. More than usual, but with all the paint coats it had from previous owners, I wanted to make sure to get it nice and thick.
5. I lightly sanded the dresser again to get rid of any over spray and to give it a shabby feel.
6. I taped off the top of the dresser so I could make stripes.
7. I spray painted the knobs and top stripes with the shiny metallic finish.

8. I applied a spray clear coat to seal the paint.

And here is the finished product.

And one more side by side..

When you have established what kind of pieces you want in your home. Make a list. Writing it down can help you when you are thrifting to remember what kind of items you are looking for.

I am always on the look out for vases and pots. I LOVE them! All shapes and sizes. But let's face it- they aren't always in the colors I am wanting. But color is an easy fix. Paint can transform anything.

I found this lovely piece while thrifting with a friend.
The color isn't awful, it just doesn't match my accent colors in my home.
So I grabbed my favorite green shade of spray paint.

After a coat of spray it was ready to place above my cabinets.

All of these pieces were found at a thrift store. Including the candles.
Why spend more, when you can spend less?

So the next time you want to accesorize your home, don't rule out some thrift store finds.

Ledge Shelf

Have you seen the wonderful ledge shelves all over pinterest? I believe I saw a ledge shelf first on Shanty 2 Chic . I knew right away that I HAD TO HAVE ONE.
I have this lovely wall that has given me so much heart ache and confusion.

The angle has made me second guess everything I have considered putting there.
But when I came across a few different styles of ledge shelves, I knew it would work perfectly. I could mount the shelf to the wall, centered, but use frames to stagger the heigth to work with the wall.

My sister, Hanna, also recently added 4 gorgeous ledge shelves to her home. When I saw them in person I knew that I was on the right track and seeing her's only solidified my decision.

This is what I used.

{2} 8ft 1x4's
{1} 1x2
Paint
Stain
Pin Nailer

YEP, that's it! Super easy!!
Of course I  opted to use my "man slave" --haha--that cute hubby of mine is pretty darn handy.

This is how you assemble it...

You could easily wood glue it too if you don't have a pin nailer.

Next mount it to your wall. We pin nailed it right into the studs.
{Sorry--this next pic is a "dumb phone" picture}

I have a frame bin. It is sad how obsessed I am with frames. I love oval frames, square frames, antique frames, pretty much any kind. So I buy lots at the thrift stores, because they always come in handy. I had everything already on hand that I used to decorate my shelf.
I just simply spray painted a few items {ivy leaf is the green I used here} and framed some printables.

Doesn't it look perfect there? I am in love with it.

The best part is how narrow it sits to the wall.

I love that you can see it from the front room too!
 {Yes, my daughter is feeding a baby sheep}

One more view...

See that banister? Well that is an upcoming post soon too! It is time for it to go bye bye.
Happy Crafting everyone.
Enjoy your week!
